About us
GSL is a specialist consultancy providing a full range of ecological services. Established since 2002, we work for a wide range of public, corporate and private clients throughout the UK.
We provide ecological services including survey, impact assessment, mitigation design, and site supervision to the construction, planning, development, and engineering industries as well as to government agencies, local authorities, voluntary conservation bodies and to private individuals.

The consultancy was established in early 2002 by Graeme Smart and became a private limited company later that year. Prior to this, Graeme’s previous experience in the disciplines of ecology, nature conservation and biodiversity included work for Northumberland and Derbyshire Wildlife Trusts; as a Senior Ecologist for a multi-disciplinary consultancy; and as a private consultant.
Graeme has a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences from the University of York and an MSc in Environmental Management Practice from the University of Durham. He is a Chartered Environmentalist and a full member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
